Maritime Security In Nigeria's Maritime Domain

Nigeria—July 20, 2013.  Vince McBeth, President and CEO, The McBeth Group International completed a 10-day visit to Abuja, Nigeria.  During the visit, McBeth met with senior Nigerian government officials, businesspersons, and thought-leaders.

“The focus of my visit to Abuja, Nigeria was maritime security.  With increasing maritime commerce in its territorial waters and in its near-shore environment, especially petroleum extraction and processing, criminal and insurgent elements have sought to take advantage of this growth by attacking production facilities and stealing petroleum products,” said McBeth.

Some reports indicate that the annual losses to this criminal and insurgent activity equal more than USD $4 billion.  Inasmuch as 40 percent of Europe’s oil and 30 percent of US oil comes from Nigeria, the problem of oil theft is an international concern.  Similarly, piracy and maritime-armed robbery and petroleum theft in the Niger Delta, Nigeria’s territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) have spiked.  The seriousness of the piracy and lawlessness in the Gulf of Guinea prompted the United Nations to enact UN Security Council Resolution 2039 in February 2012 (inter alia), expressing “deep concern” about piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea, and asking countries in the region to “act with dispatch to counter the scourge at national and regional levels.”

McBeth concluded, “A regional response that employs a maritime strategy that emphasizes smaller, less expensive and more technologically advanced vessels interconnected with a straightforward and affordable command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) networks, commanded from agile and refurbished command ships can make an immediate and dramatic impact on securing Nigeria’s maritime domain while achieving national and international maritime security mandates.”

McBeth, joined the Ellman Family, JLE Group, and the Trump Family, The Trump Group, to participate in an Innovation Summit in Tel Aviv, Israel.  The summit included participants from around the globe and focused on Israeli innovation as highlighted in the bestselling selling book, Start-Up Nation, an examination the Israeli economy and the globalization of the Middle East.  The summit was sponsored by the Israel-based charity, Beit Issie Shapiro, a national, multi-purpose organization that develops and provides services for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Technology Expo.  Moderated by Dan Senor, co-author of "Start-Up Nation", the Expo was highlighted by a panel discussion of the leading venture capitalists in Israel, to include Chemi Peres (son of Israeli President, Simon Peres) and focused on what the future might hold for technology in Israel and worldwide.  Presentations by innovative companies in the areas of medical devices, wound therapy, homeland security, clean tech, and robotics followed the panel.  We were all moved by the demonstration of a medical device that enabled enabled a former Israeli combat soldier, injured in war and restricted to wheelchair for 23 years, to walk using a robotic system attached to his legs.

THE PENTAGON, Washington, DC – October 1, 2009 – The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Michael G. Mullen hosted an award, farewell, and transition ceremony in honor of TMGI President and CEO, Vincent D. McBeth, in the Joint Staff Flag Room at the Pentagon in Washington, DC as he completed 22 years of active duty service.  During his military career, McBeth served in seven warships and as the Commanding Officer of two, was a White House Fellow to the President of the United States, and Special Assistant to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Secretary of the Navy, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Chief of Naval Operations, and Vice Chief of Naval Operations.
